The great G minor symphony, complete first movement. |

Story Behind the Song
In 1990 I learned a couple of piano concertos intending to use my synthesizers to accompany me.
I started to work on Mozart's A major Concerto K488, but I realised very soon that I needed to
practise orchestration without the added complications of the piano and embedded cue points.
I postponed working on the piano concertos because my synthesizers at the time were inadequate
for even the small scale orchestra of Mozart's K488. I began work on the G minor symphony at
the end of 1994 when I bought a new Yamaha TG500. It has a hopeless bassoon sound so I was never
happy with the TG500 version. I've been working for a few days on rewriting the midi data for
the 8MB General Midi soundbank of the Soundblaster Live! card. The French Horn though comes
from the TG500. One minute and twenty seven seconds into this performance, bar 72 of Mozart's
score, is the exchange between the clarinet and the bassoon, to me, one of the loveliest passages
in all music. Then after the orchestral outburst which follows, there appears to be a repitition
of the exchange - but this time the bassoon leads. It's marvellous that with the wonders of modern
technology, I can play it all by myself.
