“If there was a heaven the City of God would certainly be its music”. - Elizabeth Brown: The title “The City of God” refers to the music of heaven. “Eye has not seen nor has ear heard the beauties that God has in store for those who love him”. The title for this work was inspired by this passage in the bible. I invite you to listen to this work and judge for yourself. I can assure you that it’s an adventure and is something that your ear has never heard nor has your mind ever imagined possible for the expression of the human spirit! |

Story Behind the Song
The City of God (1990)
The title “The City of God” refers to the music of heaven. “Eye has not seen nor has ear heard the beauties that God has in store for those who love him”. The title for this work was inspired by this passage in the bible. Before continuing with the story behind the “City of God”, I would like to share with you a prayer that I felt in my heart before beginning this work.
Dear Heavenly Father,
I thank you for this precious gift which is so dear to my heart, the gift of music, which is your voice of love in the world. May it always be for you a source of sweetest consolation, as it is for us who are touched by it. Help me then to be a worthy instrument of your love and bless my hands so I may play that which you send me.
Father, you are the author of all that is created and uncreated. You have conceived of every piece of music before the beginnings of the world. May I be so blest then as to hear the notes as you would have them. Let not my sinfulness and human limitations set boundaries on your infinite scope of musical creativity, but rather may it gain for me your pity and cause your spirit to flow.
Keep me always humble so that I may recognize your hand at work. May my music always give you glory and honor. Sustain me in patience and with hope until you choose to visit me with your inspiration.
This is the prayer that I tried to recite each time I set out to work on this composition. The period of time, in which this work was composed, was very stress full because I was working fulltime as a carpenter and could hardly find the strength to compose. You may believe whatever you like, however, this is the work that resulted. Many people say that the Rachmanioff Third Piano Concerto, is the most difficult piano work ever composed, others believe that the “City of God” is. The score is over a hundred pages long and the relentless tempo and feverish piano gymnastics never let up. I would also like to note that this work was composed before I ever knew anything about the computer. One listener who heard the work on WNYC said, “If there was a heaven the City of God would certainly be its music”. I invite you to listen to this work and judge for yourself. I can assure you that it’s an adventure and is something that your ear has never heard nor has your mind ever imagined possible for the expression of the human spirit. If you are a composer, I would like to share this prayer with you so that you may tap into all the strength that that creator has to empower his humble creatures with. I believe that music is a gift from God and should try to express that which he intended, beauty. May the “City of God” be a source of beauty and joy for you!
Sincerely
David Bagno
P.S.] This is only the finale. If people express enough interest and desire I will release the complete work!
