	Story Behind the Song The motivation was hope and the wonder of a new life and another chance... Don't really know if I would want to have favorite songs of my own... like I think Bob Dylan once said, songs are like your children, and you love them all in different ways... but if I had to pick one of mine, this would be it. It means so much to me personally, and I know many others who can relate and have hopefully gained some strength from it as well. The lyrics are in some cases a play on words (Me? No!), and illustrate that in recovery terminology and life, often there are some seemingly paradoxical principles at work-- you 'surrender to win'... when you admit you're powerless you can gain some strength... it takes faith to have faith, etc. (See also... NA Basic Text, Chapter 10) Had the music for a while, but could not find any words, or a way to sing over the music, then one night I started playing the two main chords again, and tried singing different than I had been, and not only the phrasing, but the first few lines of lyrics came out almost instantly. Sometimes you can fight it and try so hard for so long, and get nothing, and then you just sort of... surrender your will... and... you win! :o) In retrospect, I'm not really happy with the performance on this recording. It's OK, but a little choppy and flat. I had only written the song a couple months before this, and hadn't played it out very much. Not that I do it much different now, but the singing is definitely stronger and the whole feel a little more relaxed and natural. A studio version with some harmonica and violin will be on my next album...
