Story Behind the Song
Sexual metaphors are the chief, perhaps the only, metaphors in the blues. You know what a metaphor is, don't you? "Yeah, what are you 'mad-at-her-for?'" See how it works? I must emphasize that "Itsy Bitsy Spider Blues" is not autobiographical. Just because the blues is intense feeling, doesn't make it unsophisticated. I probably came about writing this song when my two kids were little, and I was playing a lot of children's songs. It is not the first blues based on a children's rhyme. Check out Robert Jr. Lockwood's "Little Boy Blue." My song is 4.04 minutes long, and that's exactly how long it took to record.
Lyrics
I'm an itsy bitsy spider, let me climb up your water spout.
I'm an itsy bitsy spider, let me climb up your water spout.
Let the rain come falling down. Don't care if you wash me out.
Let the rain come falling down, let it wash down your window pane.
Let the rain come falling down, let it wash down your window pane.
When the sun dries up all the rain, I'll climb up your spout again.
I'm just an itsy bitsy spider, but I can climb for a long long time.
Yes, I'm just an itsy bitsy spider, but I can climb for a long time.
When I climb up your spout, baby, it's gonna rain every time.
