Story Behind the Song
This piece was essentially inspired by my frustration. Societies, in general, exert pressure that attempts to "mold" people so that their personalities are more supportive of the societal norms. Much of the population allows this to happen, and one of the results is that citizens just surrender the development of their own uniqueness, "for the greater good", and the perception of greater security for themselves.
I believe that view of security is a falsehood, when viewed from the larger perspective of a life that spans an unknown length of time into the future. The greater security lies in defending and developing ones own prismatically gem-like traits, such that the universe is a richer place because of me (or you) being in it.
Although there are no lyrics involved, the emotions are very intense for me, and I hope the song helps communicate that to the listener.
As is typical with a Kalaban song, the birthing process is long and arduous, due to the part-time nature of our involvement and our geographic separation, presently. This song has actually been in my head since 1978. Mike and I are on the verge of being able to collaborate in a psuedo-live fashion very soon, in spite of me being in Utah and he being in Texas. This should vastly speed things up.
The version of the song that is heard in the "Opus" interview is one in which I played all the instruments, creating what we are calling a storyboard of the song. By the time the song is released in full, Mike will have had the chance to input his ideas and keyboard prowess, and the song will likely have changed considerably. So far, we both like what happens when the other puts his hands all over my baby. I expect Opus to be the same. Hope you enjoy it!
