Story Behind the Song
Written following a week-long journey with Outward Bound, horsetrailing through the rugged canyons of Robbers Roost Ranch in southeastern Utah. This area along the Outlaw Trail was once the home of the legendary Butch Cassidy, and the ranch is now owned by 3rd generation homesteader A.C. Ekker.
The track was recorded on a Roland VS880 digital workstation. All instruments played by Ronnee Ringquist and Rob Adams. The "guitonga" heard on this song is a conga beat played on the spruce top and mahogany back of two acoustic guitars.
Lyrics
In the wide open spaces of the West
There's a place where the cowboy's still alive
And the wind blows the sand across the desert
Through the canyons where the outlaws ran to hide
A hundred years ago it was home
To a desperate outlaw band
Living in a time and a place
Where the six-gun ruled the land
North of the Colorado, west of the Green
Henry Mountains lookin' on
There's a high desert country and its
Deep rugged canyons that is known as Robbers Roost
In 1884 Butch came riding through these canyons
With a band of stolen ponies for the Colorado range
And he was just a boy, but an outlaw's soon a man
And now it wasn't long at all
Before the bandits and the lawmen knew his name
Ride along, ponies, ride along...
Ride along, ponies, ride along...
North of the Colorado, west of the Green
Henry Mountains lookin' on
There's a high desert country and its
Deep rugged canyons that is known as Robbers Roost
Nowadays the Roost is owned
By a ranchin' man who seldom roams
Away from the land where he's been
Living all his days
And he was raised on the history
Of the time of Butch Cassidy
Raised on the legends
of the wild men who rode the Outlaw Trail
Ride along, ponies, ride along...
Ride along, ponies, ride along...
