Story Behind the Song
This instrumental is as smooth as silk! Filled with classic guitars and piano over a laid-back beat with melodic strings this arrangement speaks of peace and security. Gods true worshippers are in a constant state of living involving the whole person with his/her heart, soul and mind. (Matt 22:37) This outstanding song pictures the rest that those who trust God with everything will always find.
This song was written during a time when I was beginning to realize just how close God is to us. Throughout my life I have valued the relationship that I have had with my wife, kids, parents and friends. There have been many times, when we have shared the deepest things in our lives, that we have felt very close to each other. Faithfulness and trust has brought us even closer as the relationships have continued to bond.
Yet there is no earthly relationship that can compare with our relationship with God. There is none whom I can trust more than my Savior. God lives inside of us which is closer to me than any other can possibly come. It is only natural, therefore, that we should dedicate our lives to the One who is closer than any other.
As I began to realize the extent that I could trust God who is near I realized how important it is that I dedicate all of my life to Him as an act of worship. The praise song Closer Than a Friend came out of that thought.
This song turned out to be one of smoothest mixes of the Selah CD Stop and Think About It. Early in 1999 I uploaded it to the Internet and it received tremendous success. As a result it has been sung in congregations throughout the world. In Brazil a translator named Emerson was in the process of opening up Wigtune music in his country by translating various songs into Portuguese. In that regard, he contacted me, asking for instrumentals for various Wigtune songs that his musical group could sing to. One of these was Closer Than a Friend which I had not yet made and instrumental for.
Moved by his excitement, I rushed to complete this arrangement in order to add it to The Piano CD. Because of technical reasons it was easier to completely re-write the instrumentals, rather than use what had been on the Selah CD. I am glad that I did! The song turned out so excellent that I decided to re-record vocals over it for Vanessas solo album Amazing Grace. The laid-back beat compliments the piano and acoustic guitars that wind around smooth, elastic strings.
So, Emerson in Brazil, we pray that you are blessed by this instrumental. And. . .we have confidence that as all of you listen to this melodic piece that you will be lifted up with praise and adoration of our wonderful God who can be trusted better than any friend.
Lyrics
Closer Than a Friend
Though my enemies surround me, Lord I shall not be afraid,
Cause I know You are closer than a friend.
And Ill never serve another, for You are all Ill ever need,
Yes I know, Youll be with me to the end.
And I will worship only you, Lord,
Take my heart, my soul and my mind.
And I will trust in You O Jesus,
You made the sacrifice.
I will worship only you, Lord,
Youll be with me till the end.
I will trust in You,
Cause youre closer than a friend.
Though I thought my life was lost, I found it all to be in You,
Now I know, You are closer than a friend.
When I thought I was forsaken, You held me in Your loving hands,
Yes I know, Youll be with me to the end.
I will worship only you, Lord,
Take my heart, my soul and my mind.
And I will trust in You O Jesus,
You made the sacrifice.
I will worship only you, Lord,
Youll be with me till the end.
I will trust in You,
Cause youre closer than a friend.
I will worship only you, Lord,
Take my heart, my soul and my mind.
And I will trust in You O Jesus,
You made the sacrifice.
I will worship only you, Lord,
Youll be with me till the end.
I will trust in You,
Cause youre closer than a friend.
I will trust in You,
Cause youre closer than a friend.
You are closer than a friend.
