A compilation of musical themes from my complete original soundtrack to Fritz Lang's 1926 silent classic, Metropolis. The music featured here is an abridged sample of the opening scenes of the movie, in which the plight of the subterranian workers is contrasted with the joy of the high paradise garden for the sons of the masters of Metropolis. | MP3.com CD: Omnia Mihi 1.02 - buy it! Story Behind the Song
The challenge in creating a complete original score for a silent movie is that one must find a type of equilibrium between the German Expressionist movement in the arts which flourished during the 1920s and the implications of modern technology and current musical trends. As the first science fiction film and a direct ancestor of the 'bleak futuristic city' motif found in such movies as Dark City and Blade Runner, the film is a perfect opportunity to combine modern electronic music with seventy year old fears about the implications of such technology. Modern synthesized and sampled sounds merge seamlessly with traditional orchestral instruments throughout my full 95 minute score. Be sure to listen to my other Metropolis-inspired pieces, and I will make more available according to demand. E-mail me at LstPuritan@aol.com with comments or requests.
