"The Devil Knows" genre: Satire

	Simple accompaniment, but with a few different rhythms. Almost all the chords are minor, and together with a heavy, dark arrangement give a feeling of being way down in hell. The lyrics are the style you might find in rap music, with an element of humour. Basically though, it's about the devil and the blame he cops for the misbehaviour of mortal people.

	Story Behind the Song It was early 1998 and I was having difficulties coming up with a topic to write a song about. Someone who himself is a song writer suggested that I write a song about the devil (ala the Rolling Stones) so, eventually, I did. The lyrics came to me surprisingly quickly considering that few other of my songs, and I've written many since, contain lyrics of such inventiveness. The melody, in contrast, took a while to sort out, even with simple chords. Lyrics The Devil Knows Tom Waits would say, "I think we should move right into the religious material" by Nikolas Moore 1. Far away from where you live, There's a place where no one gives, Little men with pitchforks dwell, A sign that says 'Welcome to Hell', Do you know who owns this home, See him sitting on his throne, Say hello to the Devil. 2. He's always looking out for you, Seeing what sort of things you do, And if he sees you feeling weak, He gets in your mind when you're asleep, And then when you wake up, you say, 'I feel very bad today.' It's thanks to the Devil. CHORUS Well the devil knows me, The devil knows you, The devil knows all of us it's true, The devil knows why, The devil knows how, Don't you let him get you now. 3. A long time ago he lived on high, Friend of the one who ruled the sky, Didn't like everything so pure, Angels he did try to lure, So God he had to give him the clout, But though he was down he wasn't out, You can't kill the devil. Chorus 4.We're shooting each other left and right, Another dark murder on another dark night, People argue over who gets the money, Complain when it's raining or when it's sunny, Hear the curses watch 'em fall, No escape from them at all, Blame it on the devil.
