Constant, running bass gives the feeling of driving fast while the midi guitar plays low, two-note chords and a higher counter melody. An acoustic guitar plays continuous chords throughout the song. There's a build-up to the chorus which evidences the suffering of the character in the song. The verses set the scene. Yet there is also a sort of peacefulness about the end.

    Story Behind the Song
For ages I was thinking along the lines of writing a song about the end of the world but finally I concluded it wasn't very original and I saw I could put the idea to a lot more use by changing the last word. I use the title phrase itself in a number of different concepts in this song, none of them really from my own experience. I decided to really emphasise the low instruments, which I haven't done in any other song.

    Lyrics
    END OF THE ROAD

    by Nikolas Moore

Well it's 40 on the outside you've been driving on all day,
Looking left and looking right to find a place to stay,
    But you know,
    It ain't here.
Looking back forlorn at all the places far behind,
Clearing all your feelings searching for that peace of mind,
    Ah so,
    It ain't fair.
Feel the motor running feel you're getting into gear,
Forget what's out the window yeah forget that she ain't here,
    No go,
    Outta beer.
Just pull out off the highway to a town go with the flow,
Keep in check and head towards a place that you both know,
    So slow,
    Oh dear.
Did ya think that livin' good was all that life's about,
Those who take you in come rainy day they'll spit you out,
Tried so hard did all you could you gave it all your strength,
But read the sign don't cross the line oh boy you're off your depth,
    Slow down slow down,
It's the end of the road.

Players they have visions yeah they have their goal in mind,
Cop the pain and win the game and let the world turn kind,
    Until
    It's just a dream.
Fight it out they bust their gut and give it all their salt,
Fightin' fit don't know their gone until they hit the wall,
    It kills
    Unforeseen.
See the pieces falling down descending from the sky,
Helpless as an ant looks up wide-eyed and wondring why,
Tried so hard did all they could they used up all their strength,
Missed the sign they crossed the line gone down into the depths,
    Down down down,
    The end of the road.

Hittin' down the highway watch 'em ridin' on and on,
Over the horizon 'till they vanish and they're gone,
    Ride on
    Keep up the race.
You stare on down the road she took her tracks are left to see,
Turn away and hear the rain come down and set her free,
    So long,
    Not left a trace.
And even when we're through our lives done all there is to do,
Crossed the bridges done the distance hardened through and through,
Inevitable day it comes we've used up all our strength,
So long world we won't be back although we've done our best,
    No more, forever,
    The end of the road.
