Story Behind the Song
The speech rhythm that would be produced when speaking the words to the poem is adopted instead by the violin.
Lyrics
"At Dusk"
Through trouble and joy
we have come hand in hand;
now after our wonderings
we are resting above the quiet countryside.
All around us hills fall away into valleys
the sky is already growing darker,
two lonely larks still climb
half dreaming into the evening haze.
Come hither and let them fly,
soon it will be time for sleep,
let us not go astray
in this solitude.
O broad, tranquil peace!
So deep in the dusk,
how weary we are from walking --
is this perhaps death?
Joseph von Eichendorff
