A funny song about what can happen (or not happen!) when all you do is play video games.
CD: Eric Herman and the Invisible Band - The Kid In The Mirror   Label: Butter-Dog Records
Credits: Eric Herman Endres and Roseann Endres, music; Kenn Nesbitt, lyrics

    Story Behind the Song
This was the last song to be written for the Kid In The Mirror album. We had 10 songs for the album, but ended up dropping one, and wanted to replace it with something. As was the case with the other Kenn Nesbitt poems that I've turned into songs, I picked up one of his books and flipped through until something struck me. This poem was very similar to a song I had written previously, called "Don't Disturb Me Now", about someone who's life passes them by because of an addictive video game. But this was much more to the point and really just a better version of essentially the same thing, so I came up with some chords for this pretty quickly and we had our 10th song.

My wife Roseann helped a lot on this song. She pushed for a couple of the chord changes, and also 'played' the video game sound effects. My original thought was to have the sound effects going perfectly in rhythm with the music... *play *my *vide-*o *game, etc. But she suggested it would be better to have the sound effects more realistic to someone actually playing a video game. She was right! We used some soundfont FX for that, one of which is a pitch-altered capture of an original series Star Trek bridge noise. If you heard it without the pitch-adjust, you'd probably recognize it.

    Lyrics
    VIDEO GAME
(c)2003 Words by Kenn Nesbitt, Music by Eric Herman Endres and Roseann Endres

I'd like to have an adventure
To seek my fortune and fame
But I think I might get homesick
so I'll just play my video game

I'd like to be in the circus
With lions and tigers to tame
But it seems like too much work
so I'll just play my video game

I'd love to be a movie star
So people would know my name
But it must take a long tim
so I'll just play my video game
    Play my video game

    I'm getting older now
And I haven't found fortune and fame
I never worked in the circus
    And nobody knows my name

I really can't say for certain
Who is or isn't to blame
Excuse me but I have to go
    And play my video game
    Play my video game...
