Story Behind the Song
Originally written by James Zimmerman as a patriotic anthem for "The American Legion" this version is influenced by co-writer Craig S. Lueck (a.k.a. "Luke") refining the lyric to be generally patriotic, but nonspecific to "The American Legion."
Lyrics
I Love America (Reprised)
Do you understand the reasons
We have troops in foreign regions?
Do you know why our flag's red, white, and blue?
When you see Old Glory flyin'
Does it make you feel like tryin'
To defend the liberty bestowed on you?
I love America, land of the free;
I love America, there's not a better place to be!
If you remember sons and daughters
That fought across the waters
To keep us free to live the way we do,
Then you'll understand the reasons
We have troops in foreign regions,
And I'll tell you why our flag's red, white, and blue.
Our flag is red for blood shed
To keep our nation free;
Love of God's the reason
Our nation came to be;
Blue is for the valor
Of all the brave that died;
White signifies the sacrifice
Of those they left behind.
I love America, land of the free;
I love America, there's not a better place to be!
