Story Behind the Song
This song is a tribute to all of those who helped bring about the end of the Vietnam war through non-aggressive measures. The historic image of the flower child placing a flower in the barrel of a soldier's gun was the main inspiration for the sentiments it expresses.
Lyrics
Where did all the flower children go?
With just a dream, they went to San Francisco.
They came with a dream and a flower,
Never knowing they were angels with power.
In the dream, you wore a flower in your hair.
Was this a dream, or were you really there?
Were you fully aware of the power
In the flower you were wearing in your hair?
There's a rainbow painted across the skies
Of San Franciso, of San Francisco.
The Byrds and the Airplane fly by.
In the dream, rock and roll echoes through the sky.
In the dream, the children held the power
In their hands, when they picked the flower.
And in the dream, the children placed the flower
In the barrel of the gun, and peace was ours.
There's more power in the flower than the gun.
The flower ended war for everyone.
There's a rainbow painted across the skies
Of San Francisco, San Francisco.
There's a rainbow reaching for you and I
And San Francisco, San Francisco.
Where did all the flower children go?
They disappeared into the mist of San Francisco.
Where did all the flower children go?
The mist disappeared into the rainbow.
There's a rainbow painted across the skies
Of San Francisco, San Francisco.
Where did all the ones we once loved go?
Into the rainbow...into the rainbow.
There's a rainbow painted across the sky...
