Story Behind the Song
During 889 AD, the seven chieftains of the seven Hungarian (Magyar) tribes (Nyeck, Megyer, Kurtgyarmat, Tarjan, Jeno, Ker, Keszi) elected Árpád, and his future sons as their rulers. Árpád was a direct descendent of Attila, and a chieftain of the largest tribe (Megyer). The seven chieftains swore a ritual oath of blood, known as Vérszerződés; Each leader cut his arm, drained his blood into a golden cup. The blood was then mixed, and then the tribal leaders drank from the cup. This treaty of blood united the Magyars as one. Prince Árpád now led his people westward in quest of a new home. Their journey brought them to the outer slopes of the Carpathians, and by the favour of fortune, to a new life beyond them.
Lyrics
Seven tribes united by their pagan blood
Their fate forever sealed by the reign of Arpad
Seven tribes, their numbers many thousands strong
Ancient honour, our past will never be forgotten
Nyeck, Megyer, Tarjan, Kurtgyarmat, Jeno, Ker, Keszi!
Nyeck, Megyer, Tarjan, Kurtgyarmat, Jeno, Ker, Keszi!
Ancient Magyars, the fierces of the pagan hordes
Bound by blood, they leave their land Etelkoz
Ancient Magyars, their numbers many thousands strong
Ancient honour, our past will never be forgotten
Nyeck, Megyer, Tarjan, Kurtgyarmat, Jeno, Ker, Keszi!
Nyeck, Megyer, Tarjan, Kurtgyarmat, Jeno, Ker, Keszi!
