Story Behind the Song
In 1985 I was too poor to buy presents, so I recorded a Christmas 'album' on my 4-track to give as presents. All the cuts were covers except this one, a sort of 'Night Before Christmas' story set to a pseudo-rap tune. I tried to mention all my close relatives in the song, including my father's dog, 'Heinie'. Since I procrastinated until Dec. 23 to start, this song was written and recorded in about two hours. All tracks were first or second takes.
Lyrics
I come home one morning kinda late,
3 days before December 28.
Come in my door and what I saw,
A short little man stand 5 feet tall.
He was dressed in red with trim of white
Opened his bag to my delight.
He put the presents on the floor
under the tree next to the door.
One for Jessie and Brenda and Barb and Bill,
Michael and Gary and Darrell.
He got Pop and Alma and Heinie too
Something I know they sure can use.
Then he walked away from the tree
and went over to the chimney.
Up went the bag, them himself
that great big spry jolly little elf.
He got in his sleigh and what did I hear?
He called out to his reindeer.
"Now Dasher and Dancer and Prancer too,
Vixen and Comet and I'm still not through.
Cupid and Donner and Blitzen doll,
Dash away, dash away, dash away all!"
He said to me when he left my sight,
"Merry Christmas, and goodnight."
