A lonely song about missing home, wrapped up in a letter to the maid.
CD: Shadows of Belgrade   Label: self released in Hong Kong (pm productions)
Credits: written, arranged, recorded and performed by Paul Meredith. Mastering assistance in Hong Kong from Simon Hui.

    Story Behind the Song
I wrote "Goodbye Maria" in November 1999, just after being posted to Belgrade from Skopje Macedonia, doing post conflict relief projects. It felt cold and lonely in new surroundings, and I came up with the letter to the maid idea as a means to express some things in a new way for me. I like the simple folk song approach, it seemed to me something Willie Nelson or somebody like that could sing. The song was recorded entirely in Belgrade during winter 2000, with the vocal track redone in Hong Kong a few months later. I hope you like it.

    Lyrics
    GOODBYE MARIA

    1. Goodbye Maria, don't know when I'll see ya
I'm far away, but please don't worry about me
Now I'm washin' my own clothes, and even if the water overflows
    I'm still much more self-reliant, you'll agree

    2. Goodbye Maria, understand -- I had to free ya
You did everything, but I don't need you anymore
Now I do the cookin' honey, sometimes it's kinda funny
what I eat, but that's what microwaves are for

You still got my kids, you still got my wife
You got my admiration for the rest of your life
Some might look at you and say you're only a maid
but you're an angel -- if it weren't too strange
I'd arrange you in the finest silk and jade

    3. So goodbye Maria, now if I get diarrhea
I got myself, and no one else to blame
Well it's a shame I had to go, but when I cook and clean and sew
You know I'll think nice things about ya just the same

    You still got my kids...

    4. So goodbye Maria, nos veremos otro dia
That's Spanish for I'll see you again some day
Now I know you're takin' care of my dear wife and family there
When I come home won't you help me pack my things away
Cause when I come home Maria, I'm comin' home to stay
