Story Behind the Song
*i used the writing below as an english assignment before so thats why its the way it is
It was approaching midnight on the sixteenth day of May and finally the lyrics I had been praying for were illuminating through me onto the paper. It was unlike my lyrics of relationships and heartache that had become so many in my pile of lyrics. They were serious, important and urgent. They were on a subject that had always bothered me, abortion.
That night I wrote one verse and a course of a song I titled “Severed Appendages”. I also wrote the music to the course in my head and was ready to show it to the rest of the band when they lyrics were complete.
In the next few months I had been praying about and working on completing they lyrics but really didn’t find anything solid to add. I didn’t want to wreck the best lyrics I had ever begun to write so I left it.
In mid-July I got a call from our bands Guitarist, Lee, who via telephone showed me a new song he was working on. It was amazing, and I contemplated using the Severed Appendages lyrics but chose not to because I had already written the course in my head and wanted to use it.
Soon after, Steve, our key-boardist, and I were in Vancouver meeting up with friends to go to a concert in Washington. While we were waiting in a church basement Steve showed me the piano parts to the song. The course was note for note what I had in my head. It was nothing short if a miracle. I was excited and decided to use the lyrics with Lee’s song.
In Washington I met people who were involved with an organization called “Rock for Life” a group the fought abortion with a range of musical artists. They gave me a lot of inspiration before I left.
On the way home (July 27th) I wrote another verse to complete the song. At the end of the summer the band got together to complete the song.
We practiced it and played it at three shows. The crowd responded to this song better then any we had played before. And on Saturday October forth, we recorded a demo version of it in Justin’s basement. And that brings me to right now.
Lyrics
*verse one
How can you stop a heart?
What gives you the right,
To say you’re justified
To take a human Life?
What Happened To the Children?
How can you sleep at night?
Her heart pounded,
She was alive
You stole her chances
Was she brought up to die?
You do this everyday
How can you not cry?
*course
Severed appendages
Can’t be mended with bandages
Look at the work of your hands
You see life as it flees
See a heart, no longer beats
But you do it again
This is commonplace
*course two
You say it’s not wrong
It’s the only way
But I don’t understand
Understand the things you say
Cause when did homicide
Become okay?
Frail Bodies
Are torn apart
Gods creations
Beating hearts
Change from one
That’s where it starts
*here we have a talking part that changes every time we play iy but here its more or less what I said on the recording
Some of you might be offended by this song. While I’m offended that in my city alone in the past year 1000 unborn children have been brutally murdered and its becoming socially acceptable. I will not be quiet about this, I will rise against and take action.
*course
Severed appendages
Can’t be mended with bandages
Look at the work of your hands
You see life as it flees
See a heart, no longer beats
But you do it again
This is commonplace
