This is a song comparing modern day bikers to cowboys a hundred years ago and about the disappearing open road.
CD: American Rider: A Biker Opera   Label: Waterloo
Credits: Words and Music by Ian Ballard

    Story Behind the Song
This song is part of the American Rider: A Biker Opera. Two biker friends are sitting around a campfire and one likens bikers to cowboys. Danny Oberbeck played drums and Lief Frederick played bass. I did all of the guitars and vocals.

    Lyrics
We're the last of the cowboys
    On our heavy metal horses
Riding the range from day to day
Lawyers and outlaws and other social misfits
When the good times are gone we ride away
With our chaps and leathery faces and drinking cheap tequila
And saddlebags hanging down on either side
The West is slowly shrinking into urban streetlights blinking
Running out of places left to hide

    The Last of the cowboys
    Rolling along
At ninety miles per hour before the West is gone
    Revving their horses
They love to hear that noise
The thunder of the last of the cowboys

    The last of the cowboys
    From Maine to Monterrey
    Looking for an endless highway
The secret to life is not to die too young
But simply to just ride away
With tread on your tires and gas in your tank
And friends around the campfire at night
    With freedom giving chase
    At an ever building pace
Running out of highways left to ride

    Chorus

    Like a pack of desperados
    In columns down the line
    Feeling free as a bird
    All we have is time

    Chorus
