Story Behind the Song
I'm sure this song was influenced musically by all the Genesis songs I used to listen to in the late 70s, esp. with that telltale (to me anyway) major 7th with 5 in the bass carrying over to the 1 chord major 9.
I wrote Limitations in 1994, off another guitar bit I'd been playing for a long time and wondering if I'd ever do anything with. I started playing around with the bird in the cage idea, and it turned out thusly. I hope you like the song.
Lyrics
LIMITATIONS
1. Ever hear a story about a bird inside a cage
She was trapped in there for ages
And for the longest time she dreamed that she could fly
As time passed she got used to it, the cage became her home
She no longer cared to roam
Till finally came the day the doors were opened wide
That crazy bird just shut the gate and stayed inside
If she'd only known, she coulda flown so high
But she no longer saw the sky
I think sometimes you and I are a little bit like that bird
Believing all the lies we've heard
Cured of the dreams that make the walls between us fade
And we like these little cages that we made
Well who could blame that little birdy if she stayed
If you consider what she paid
Limitations always turning this world upside-down
Your heart tells you to soar but you're still stuck there on the ground
I don't deny my limitations
I just don't like interpretations telling me all I see is all I'll ever see
Trapped inside a cage without a key
2. The cage of separation, loneliness and strife
Must be something somewhere in your life
Like a mountain so high you'd never try to climb
We could reach inside and break the chains that hold us here
We could watch 'em disappear
And create a world we never saw before
Well then tell me friend, what are we living for
If you're satisfied with that lonely cage of yours, I say goodbye
Cause I want more
Limitations turning this world upside-down again
You say one day you're breakin' free, but you're not saying when
I can't deny our limitations
I just don't like explanations telling me all we are is all we'll ever be
Trapped inside this cage without a key
