Story Behind the Song
I came up with the part and melody on piano actually, and it was in 87/88 when it was substantially written. I touched up a few spots and finally recorded it in Belgrade Serbia, in winter 2000.
The theme of the soul's advancement as being compared to valleys one must traverse through on an epic journey towards one's Creator came to me through the Baha'i Faith, a beautiful and gentle religion which I explored and practiced for many years and which was a great influence. If I could sing like Jon Anderson (Yes) then the song might achieve more of the transcendent quality to which it aspires. I'd like to try recording it again at some point.
Lyrics
VALLEY OF LOVE
1. He saw her in dreams, an angel appearing in a valley of shadows
And he knew it was real, made a deal with his soul, he said I'll follow where she goes
So he set out to find her, payin' no mind to the voices of reason
Chased after the dream song he saw in his heart, through a world of illusion
Lost in the Valley of Love
Search in a storm for an answer
Gonna follow her shadow wherever it leads
2. Tempted by fears and jealousy's tears to abandon his vision
He trusted in love, and prayed for the soul of the girl that would free him
Now wandering endlessly calling her name as he sings to the starlight
Through deserts and cities, oceans and fire love leads him to her light
Crossin' the Valley of Love
Chasin' that storm for an answer
You know he's got to follow, won't You show him the way...
3. High on a hill on a distant horizon he finally saw her
Surrounded by colors she danced in a rainbow of light; he moved closer
Now sharin' the song locked inside so long, the dream recreated
He reached out to touch her, stretchin' to catch her but her image was faded
But she turned back to him and she smiled
She said now you found a part of the answer
And as she left him her heart grew as big as the sky
Standing alone at the top of his mountain, he felt her love shinin'
And stretched out below him, a journey before him, the Valley of Knowledge
