Story Behind the Song
I had this riff going in my head for over a decade before I finally decided what to do with it. The handover has now been over five years, this song came out after one year; a lot has changed. Hong Kong was often refered to as a "golden goose" for China, yet now its prospects of retaining preeminence among asian cities has dimmed; many think Shanghai (where I live now) is already overtaking HK... Has the last "golden egg" already been laid?
Peter's drumming really gives the song its energy, I think. Hope you enjoy it.
Lyrics
LAST GOLDEN EGG
1. Golden goose is on the loose in Xianggang
Can't make her stay inside her golden cage
Well if she don't come back what happens to the story
Does the fairy tale get scary, now that we turned the page?
So what did ya think about 1997?
Could there possibly be anything left to say
Well if you're lookin' for a post handover heaven, it ain't here
But in this atmosphere there's got to be a ray of sunshine
Politics don't worry me, the hand of destiny's yet to be played
And nobody's leavin' until they believe the last golden egg's been laid
Might be tomorrow...
2. Human rights and democratic freedom
Are of some vague concern to people here
Well China don't know what's on their minds, they can't read 'em
And confrontation makes it hard to make the meaning clear
And what about the gold inside the Chinese spirit
What about the soul that sings within
Well we can't be blind but still, don't need to fear it
Got to find a mix that makes everybody win
Politics don't worry me, the hand of destiny's yet to be played
And nobody's leavin' until they believe the last golden egg's been laid
Might be tomorrow...
3. I hope I see you at the next election
Please do vote, but please don't vote for me
Oh say can you see a political correction
We're all world citizens here, that's all I really want to be
c) Paul Meredith, 1999
