Story Behind the Song
The melody to Hitchin' Post came first, then the title, then I started writing lyrics for it about a cowboy who comes home and it morphed into a song about a soldier that's far away from his betrothed. Cannon fits nicely as the part about what happens from day to day.
Lyrics
When this endless task is through, the lonely days fade into the past,
You'll be a' bound to see me tying up at your hitchin' post at last.
The smell of lilac from your letter lofts its way into my soul,
When I tie up to your hitchin' post, I'll never go.
The day I started down this lonely road,
I knew how hard times would define the days.
All these hours in the dusty, nagging sun,
Where eagles watch my back; but your love's so far away.
When this endless task is through, the lonely days fade into the past,
You'll be a' bound to see me tying up at your hitchin' post at last.
Your smiling picture in my pocket pokes its way into my mind.
When I tie up to your hitchin' post, I'll never leave you behind.
I sometimes wonder how you can't regret
The life that keeps me o' so far away.
If I could only be two places at one time,
To do what I got to do, while bringing all my love to you.
You know the sun don't rise a day
Where I don't miss you like the damned.
When I come home to stay,
Will you promise me, promise me, promise me, promise me your hand?
When this endless task is through, the lonely days fade into the past,
You'll be a' bound to see me tying up at your hitchin' post at last.
The taste of biscuits that you baked me breaks its way into my heart.
When I tie up to your hitchin' post, we'll never part.
