Story Behind the Song
This was easily the most ambitious song I'd ever done when I put it together, in the early 90s. I came up with the basic riff around 1988, at the time I lived in Monterey Calif., and spent many an hour strolling the beautiful beach in nearby Carmel. Go there sometime! I started the song lyrics around that time, put it away for awhile, and finished it a few years afterward. I did a few edits on the mix this year to bring out a few things.
The genre says "love song" here, and in a way I think it is about love, as the song sort of implies towards the end. But mostly I just wanted to try and capture the feeling of just "trippin' along" on a beautiful day that stretches into afternoon and evening, thinkin' about love or friends or sex or airplanes or sailboats or whatever, sometimes imagining someone special was with you, but always enjoying the sights along the way, and that feeling of losing track of all time, and looking back and realizing you've walked for miles! It's nice to lose track of time now and then, huh?
Lyrics
TRIPPIN' DOWN BY THE SEA
1. Trippin' down by the ocean
Catch a wave to the sea
I'm slippin' out of this cage of mine
Why don't you walk with me
I can't stay in any longer
My head can't think anymore
I need to find a place to unwind
Away from walls and doors
Hear the waves a poundin'
Crash and then subside
Lovers laughter drowning out
A seabird's lonesome cry
Shells crush under your feet
Spirits breaking free
Your perfect moment may escape you
But it feels allright to be trippin' along by the sea
2. On a barren dry sandy altar
Bodies worship the sun
They dream about their skin's color
When the sacrifice is done
But if you just keep on walkin'
Your soul can soar anywhere
When you're lookin' out towards forever
And you think you're almost there
Hear the waves a poundin'
Crash and then subside
Lovers laughter drowning out
A seabird's lonesome cry
Shells crush under your feet
Spirits breaking free
Your perfect moment may escape you
But it feels allright to be trippin' along by the sea
3. A liquid starlight glitter
Dancin' over the shore
A thousand voices whisper
Songs you never heard before
A gentle wind's laughin' at you
As you walk you romanticize
Can't help but remember
The ocean in her eyes
Well those eyes that you see, they're only in your memory
But the stars, the sun, the sea -- belong to you
Hear the waves a poundin'
Crash and then subside
Lovers laughter drowning out
A seabird's lonesome cry
Shells crush under your feet
Spirits breaking free
You may never find your perfect moment
But it feels allright to be trippin' along by the sea
Along the sea come walk with me
I long to be out by the sea come away away with me
The sky the waves are callin' you, callin' out to me
Won't you set your spirit free along the sea...
