Story Behind the Song
Peace, Freedom, Democracy: nice, packaged phrases. 'Field Full Of Clover' is an after-view of war about those that fought with pride in the service of their country while being lucky enough to have survived to make it back alive. For those less fortunate, all they recieve is a small resting place in a field full of clover. Both living and dead are seemingly thrown away and forgotten as "expendable" by a government that is no longer in need of their services. Such a senseless waste of life traded in for a mere piece of real-estate in a never-ending game of political leverage.
Lyrics
You busted your ass in a far off land
Just to say you served your country
For God, a flag and that D.C. man
All for lack of sleep and a little money
Got a government that just don't care
Throw you away when the shit is over
A set of new clothes and a free ticket there
And, maybe, a shallow grave in a field full of clover
Killed 'em in France, Germany, Korea and Nam
Shot it up with the Viet Cong
There lay many an island with many a cross
They came to die but some got lost
{Well, many a faces you have seen
Ain't none yet that had a name
Now, get off your ass(es) and open your eyes
To where the government sends your children to die}
For all those buried in foreign sand
Bring them home to their promised land
It is time to stop and realize
That others don't want to be "Americanized"
("Hey, Wally, when will the battle for world domination end?")
