Story Behind the Song
A fussy baby was successfully entertained by my imitation of the birds outside the window. The name "chickadee" has a naturally funny sound. Lots of repetition and variations with easy vowel sounds soon had the baby as well as both of her older sisters smiling again. Later, this fun memory became a song. It took a couple of weeks to develop and be finished in time before the next visit.
Lyrics
IVY'S CHICKADEE SAMBA
Listen and hear what the bird may say,
"Everything is gonna be OK.
Pretty little Ivy, come and play.
It's a chickadee-dee DAY."
Chickadee dee day, chickadee dee day
Chicka chicka chicka chicka chickaday
Chicka chicka chicka day, chickadee dee day.
It's a chickadee dee day.
See the little bird in the apple tree,
Singing to you and singing to me.
We should be as happy as can be.
Be like chickadee dee DEE.
Chickadee dee dee, Chickadee dee dee
Chicka chicka chicka chicka chickadee
Chicka chicka dee, chickadee dee dee.
Be like chickadee dee dee.
Hush little baby, now don't you cry.
Birds in the trees, and sun in the sky,
Singing a song, you can almost fly.
Fly like chickadee dee FLY.
Chickadee dee fly, chickadee dee fly
Chicka chicka chicka chicka chickafly
Chicka chicka fly, chickadee dee fly
Fly like chickadee dee fly.
Chickadee says, "Now don't feel low.
"You're just a little baby, but you're gonna grow.
Stand right up upon your toe.
Dance like chickadee dee DOE."
Chickadee doe, chickadee dee doe
Chicka chicka chicka chicka chickadoe
Chicka chicka doe, chickadee dee doe
Dance like chickadee dee doe.
What the birdie says is always true.
This is what he's singing to you,
"You can do anything you want to do.
Do like chickadee dee DOO.
Chickadee dee doo, chickadee dee doo
Chicka chicka chicka chicka chickadoo
Chicka chicka doo, chickadee dee doo
Do like chickadee dee doo.
Ivy do you know how to spell your name?
Saying it and spelling it are quite the same.
Just say I-V, and add a Y.
That spells Ivy --- I - V - Y.
Chickadee dee Y, chickadee dee Y
Chicka chicka chicka chicka Ivy Y
Chicka chicka Y, chickadee dee Y
She's my little chickadee.
Chicka-A, chicka-E, chicka-I, chicka-O, chicka-U,
And don't forget my Ivy Y.
She's my little chickadee.
Yes, she's my little chickadee.
