Story Behind the Song
Rhose was our domestic helper for a few years in Hong Kong as you might have guessed. She had health problems and despite her determination to stay in Hong Kong, just couldn't; she really needed to be home to rest. I'm sure our children think of her often, especially our eldest son, and wonder how she is.
Domestic helpers from many parts of Asia come to HK to work, but I'd say over 90% are from the Philippines. Mostly legal, many not so, and they sometimes have a rough time of it. I've forgotten the exact statistic, but safe to say the economy in Philippines, not to mention many many families, greatly benefit from "eight times their old salary" sent home from Hong Kong.
I liked the way this song turned out. It's in drop D, and I liked the guitar part, the melody and the way the lyric, when it was finally hammered out, seemed to fit pretty well into the music. I recorded a piano version for the record as well. The mandolin kind of gives it a folk song feel, I think. I recorded it at Resounding Pebbles studio in Ludington Michigan, with Bob Simms, in summer of 94.
I enjoyed doing this song very much, and I hope you like it.
Lyrics
RHOSE
1. She came here from the Philippines, a land girls leave to chase a dream
workin' in somebody's home
watchin' the children
The maid that made my morning tea makes eight times her old salary since leavin' livin' in my home
watchin' the children
See the world you're gonna see the world
We will take you -- you're part of our show
Your family's there but now your family's here
Well Rhose I wonder, where do your dreams go?
2. The work is hard the day is long, you never complain but you're not that strong
Rhose something's wrong here; you've not been well for a while
The kids miss your smile
Listen to what the doctor said, we're gonna make you well but you gotta stay in bed
She said maybe you'll work again one day
Watchin' the boys play
So now you got to go back there, can't you see you need someone takin' care of you
Like you did for me
"Dylan" and Shermie
See the world someday you'll see the world
Oh Rhose, we're with you -- I think somehow you know
Your family's here but now your family's there
You'll be home soon, but where will your dreams go?
