Story Behind the Song
"I wrote the words to this song before I wrote the music. A family member of mine used to belong to a church up the street from where I live and she volunteered to work a "women's conferance" organized by the church. Upon coming home she was almost on the verge of tears. She told me about how these women (much under the demands of their husbands who were "under the commands of God") would and had abused emotionally, and/or physically their children in order to make them "serve God."
The "break a spirit" refered to in the song was a goal instructed by one of these women to get their children to obey them and in theory God. The song is very much about that and just religious hypocracy in general.
The music came together inside my head and I just kinda cranked it out one day about a year after writing the lyrics. It became everyone but my favorite song to play. Too much dark energy comes alive when I sing that song, nevertheless it's a crowd favorite now. The song, by the way, IS NOT ANTI-RELIGION, IT IS ANTI-HYPOCRACY."
Lyrics
Wash My Hands
(lyrics by R.J. Skywalker Burks,
music by R.J. Skywalker Burks and DULCET)
I see your face on my t.v. screen, your preaching the new way but it’s the same old thing
I’ll never be on good terms with you, I’ll never buy the words of a fool
You’ve turned my scriptures into what you choose, to break the backs of youth and not call it a sin
You say it’s called raising a family in Christ, but I call it abuse
Chorus:
I WASH MY HANDS OF ALL OF THIS, I WASH MY HANDS OF ALL
To break a spirit is to steal a soul, you speak of God but you don’t know
I’ll get by on what I know is true, I’ll never buy the souls of fools
To enforce is to make them resist, I’ll watch them slip through your grasp
Your children will burn as will you, I can’t watch
Coda:
God is love, you are hatred
You have no faith in your children and I have no faith in you
I feel the Force flow through me, and I feel darkness in you
