    Story Behind the Song
I first went to Mexico in 1984, to Yucatan for a semester of Spanish study. I started this song during that trip, one of my earliest songs. It was the first time this farm boy had ever been on a plane, hence the imagery from that little window there, and by far the furthest from home I'd ever been. So you'll pardon the wide-eyed wonder reflected in the song. I still feel that way when I think about the experience. The song attempts to capture the excitement and anticipation of travelling to a new place, meeting new friends, and feeling welcome.

Some of the imagery, particularly in the middle section, came from visiting the beautiful mayan ruins in that area, namely Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and Palenque. Also some of the guitar lines are inspired by Pat Metheny's "sueno con mexico," which I listened to about a thousand times in the early 80s.

I hope you like these thoughts about Mexico.

    Lyrics
    GOIN' DOWN TO MEXICO

Way-o, I'm goin' down to Mexico I'm bound
Destiny set my destination for this foreign land
I'm leavin' the cold winter behind, somethin' there I got to find
I'm staring out my little window tryin' to make out all I can

I look up at the sky and down at the sea, I see a land full of sunshine waiting for me
It's waiting for us, why don't you come along?
Put your books away and ride, people here gonna be your guide
Making you feel just like you belong

Hey there I'm flyin' so high, I got no care when I'm up in the sky
I'm starin' at the Caribbean blue and I'm too far gone to go back...

    (Spanish)

Volando hacia el cielo, mirando abajo al sueno
Tierra de los maya llama a mi
Angel dorada, senorita al lado sentada
Me cuenta sentimientos mismos que yo me senti

Vientetres anyos dormido, mundo gigante y desconocido
Aventuras ruinas romances -- tengo que ver
    Flauta distante, sigue soltero cantante
Y mi cancion extranjera pausa para entender

    Cantante tranquilo, canto por ti
    Angel descansa, vuelo por ti
    Alma nuevo relegaron a mi...

(Flying up towards heaven, looking down at a dream
Land of the maya calls to me
Angel in gold the girl sitting next to me
Shares thoughts that I was feeling too

Twenty-three years sleeping, a world so huge and unknown
Adventure ruins romance -- I've got to see
    Distant flute, a lonely singer
And my foreign song stops to understand

Singer, peace: I sing for you
Angel, rest: I fly for you
A new soul you gave to me...

Way-o about to touch down, gonna be so high when my feet hit the ground
All I need is an angel to guide me, and a song to light my way

Up at the sky and down at the sea, what I see I never found at the university
And it's waiting for us, hey angel -- you comin' along?
I'm gonna put my books away and ride, people here gonna be my guide
Makin' me feel just like we belong

    I got to go there
    I got to know there
    Gonna take it slow there
    Gonna let it flow there
    I'm goin' down to Mexico
