Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song in 1988, and at the time I thought it was the best thing I'd ever written. I like the way the straight Am chord moves into the C and resolves 4-1 to the G, and I think the melody, structure and particularly the groove worked okay. I hope you like it.
Lyrics
SHELTER OF A FRIEND
1. Drivin' to the city on a cold December night
I watched you close your eyes, drifting out of sight
Rivers of memories flowing, showing in my view
As you lay dreaming I dreamed of you
We passed through moonlit mountains, music filled the air
We sang the miles away, we laughed without a care
Warm waves washed over me as you carried me to the sky
Did you see me in the corner of your eye?
Tell me another story, sing me another song
Bring me down so gently, you'll never know I was gone
My heart fell so far for you but love would not die
It may not last forever, it may be never but I couldn't help but try
2. Now I'm on another journey, soaring high again
I'm going out to where the road stops, to where your thoughts begin
I'm searching for a rainbow, I don't care about the gold
Just give me something to reach for, something to hold
So tell me another story, sing me another song
Bring me down so gently, you'll never know I was gone
My heart fell so far for you but love would not die
It may not be forever, it may be never but I just gotta fly
3. Maybe in the future we'll understand the past
I'll know if this joy that I feel did or did not last
And if I can't hang on any longer it will not disappear
This world is always changing, but love is always gonna be here
Anyway makes no difference, you're still my journey's end
I'll be looking for the shelter of a friend
