Story Behind the Song
Really this song is self therapy, I'm the one that needs the encouragement! The head of the Chinese school I was attending liked another song I did (Hap m Happy), so offered to reduce tuition if I wrote another one using Mandarin Chinese. Heck yeah, I said.
Nothing very deep here, but it was fun to write and perform. It probably took away from my valuable study time doing the song, but it's always like that for me! Hope you like it.
Lyrics
YOU CAN SPEAK CHINESE
1. You can say hello in Guangzhou, goodbye in Shanghai
Thank you please, in Chinese -- if you can find the will to try
All it takes is your desire to make a dream come true
Well who would not admire what you're tryin' so hard to do
2. Qing zuo, he cha, sit down and drink some tea with your friend in Beijing
You can talk about the weather with your peng you -- you can talk about anything
And if you say those words in Mandarin, if they're not perfect she won't care
She knows the more you say the more you learn
And the more you learn the more you can share
Human communication, that's what it's all about
If we understand each other, brother we never gonna have to shout
Everybody's a foreigner sometime in their life, that's true
But if you show that you really want to talk to people,
People really gonna wanna talk to you
3. If I could just shuo yi dianr de Putonghua, expounding on a theme
I walk a little further down a Chinese road -- I dream a Chinese dream
Well you can say ni hau in Qingdao -- zai jian in Xian
Qing jin, please come in, speaking Mandarin
Yes I believe you can
I believe you can
Qing zai shuo yi bian (say it again!)
I believe you can
