Story Behind the Song
This song actually did get started as I noticed the moon peeping through 2 skyscrapers outside my apartment window. I laughed to remember that in rural Michigan where I'm from, you don't think twice about things like that. The phrase World's Most Stressful City was a Time or Newsweek cover about HK some years ago. I thought it was apt, and would make a good hook for a song. Thanks to Peter again for great drumming.
Lyrics
MOON OVER HONG KONG
1. You can see the Hong Kong moon glowing in the night haze
If you got the view, and the time to turn your head
But the workin' people here tend to put in long days
Best thing to do at night is go to bed
It bothers me that we barely see the stars here
When it comes to nature, I know we're out of touch
But for six million people pushin' on the subway cars here
Life goes by too fast to think about it much
Such are the ways of the World's Most Stressful City
It's a label harsh, but some say well deserved
Haze hangin' over the World's Most Stressful City
And no one knows what's gonna be preserved
2. Well the Chinese try to keep their ties to tradition
They sweep graves, light lunar lamps, and watch fireworks explode
But the government's changed now; society's in transition
Afraid to see their castle in the sky erode
They'll rename all the streets and institutions
After revolutionaries instead of queens
Then they'll be left on their own to find their own solutions
That's hard when you're still not sure what freedom's supposed to mean
Such are the ways of the World's Most Stressful City
The label's harsh, but some say well deserved
Haze hangin' over the World's Most Stressful City
And no one knows what's gonna be preserved
3. It'd do me good to get away from all this worry
Be nice to have space to sort things out in my mind
But there's no escape when everybody's in such a hurry
And if it only comes down to fate -- we're already resigned
But when the day is done I take my son swinging in the courtyard
I tell him one last push, then c'mon -- we gotta get home soon
Well as I pulled him away he lay down laughin' -- catching me off guard
"Hey daddy," he said, "Look up -- I can see the moon."
Such are the ways of the World's Most Stressful City
The label's harsh, but some say well deserved
Haze hangin' over the World's Most Stressful City
And no one knows what's gonna be preserved
No one knows what's gonna be preserved
