Story Behind the Song
It started with that fingerstyle riff, here the guitar tuning is D G D F# B E (capo 2). I think my main influence here is one of my guitar heroes, Canadian guitar and song champion Bruce Cockburn. I love many of his songs, and here I tried not only to emulate a particular style of his (without I hope actually ripping it off) but also the tone and phrasing of the lyric is almost the way I would imagine him to sing it. (Of course I'll never know!)
The drums, bass and other instruments, btw, were sequenced on a Roland pocket synth, nice handy little things with a pretty good sound.
Lyrics
HONG KONG MAN
1. 99 years the government here, they flyin' the union jack
well now they give it back -- you took it as a sign
and you stood in line for days, pushin', chokin' on the haze
in a maze of immigration.. Will you take a long vacation if things get out of hand
Hong Kong man, what's your plan for tomorrow
What game you gonna play?
You gonna go or will you stay?
The experts say that the index of your confidence is low
But do they know what's in your heart?
Hong Kong man you got to let it show
2. Hong Kong man, they called you apolitical
You didn't care who ran the show, you were never critical
Long as you had a place to go to make your family's keep
Now you sleep at night not knowin' what color stripes to wear
You're prayin' that the storm will spare the fine house you built
On reclaimated sand
Hong Kong man, what's your plan for tomorrow
What price you gonna pay?
You gonna go or will you stay?
The polls all say that the index of your confidence is low
But do they know what's in your heart?
Hong Kong man you got to let it show
Sooner or later you got to let 'em know
Change comin' for you, you got to let it show
Hong Kong man
3. Political upheaval, you see it on the news
Makin' it hard to choose
Your destiny seems so hard for you to gauge
Now you're on the stage
You're comin' of age and the world is growin' with you
And as you struggle here this weary world keeps lurchin'
searchin' for peace in every land
Hong Kong man, what's your plan for tomorrow
What's your answer for today?
Can you make it all work out anyway?
Everybody's sayin' that the index of your confidence is low
But they don't know what's in your heart
Hong Kong man you got to let it show
