Story Behind the Song
Started with that guitar riff in double drop D, and kind of unfolded from there. Karry is a real person, and it's based on a real story. I embellished a bit here and there, but it's pretty much intact.
I thought Peter's performance on djembe really gave the song a good energy, as well as the way the bridge section turned out, which I'm happy with. I hope people like it.
Lyrics
LANTAU LEGEND
1. Met a Lantau island girl who had an English name
Used to see her on the ferry to Hong Kong
Her English and my Cantonese was just about the same
Still I learned her story; now I sing her song
Karry had a smile that might've launched a thousand ships
But she couldn't bear to watch a boat leave her behind
For in her heart already she had made a thousand trips
And danced a thousand destinations in her mind
She longed to see America, maybe study over there
And I the western friend encouraged her to go
"If that's your dream, then Karry, chase it -- otherwise you're never gonna know..."
2. So many times she packed her things, but things got in the way
Sometimes dreams and cold reality collide
But she showed me all her magazines of places far away
And I knew she still was dancin' deep inside
But she had work, school, family -- something always kept her home
Seemed like every daddy's girl but her could go
"But it's my dream," she said -- "I'll chase it --
otherwise I'm never gonna know..."
so
"I'm savin' all my money for my ticket
Put my application in the mail
Look at me, you know I'm gonna make it
Yeah, look at me, you know my ship's gonna sail.."
Oh, Karry...
3. I moved off the island, never saw her till by chance
she was smiling at me on the MTR.
She took a job back in her village teaching young girls how to dance
Seemed her ship never sailed out very far...
"Smile for me my western friend, my dreams are better now
And the children dance for me, it's all the same
And if you don't mind Paul, you don't have to call me Karry now --
I use my Chinese name
