Story Behind the Song
I like the 5/4 guitar fingerstyle riff, the song unfolded from that. The song was originally titled "My New Flat," but "Waiting..." captures the intent of the song better, I now think. The song also captures a feeling I think many in Hong Kong have felt; that of waiting and wondering how Hong Kong's people will impact Chinese society in the future, and in turn how finally being a part of China, for better or worse, will impact Hong Kong. My feeling: Heck, why not be hopeful. (I'm sure other songs on "Chinese Sun" contradict this feeling!)
Lyrics
WAITING FOR A CHINESE SUN... TO SHINE
1. My new flat's beautiful; I got a view
of housing estates, and cable cars too
Red flag flies, Julys come and go
Looks like nothing's changed
I got tinted glass windows, the neighbors can't see
me watching them watching tv
Red flag's waving, people behaving
like nothing's changed
I'm waiting for a Chinese sun... to shine
2. Come see my new room take in the scenery
pretty banks and towers, the power machinery
Red flag's unfurled, and the world drags on
just like old times
We drown in a market maze losses and gains
Tied down to the dollar, the collar remains
The chains still weigh, and the sky goes gray
in the springtime
And we're all released when East and West combine
And the world waits for a Chinese sun to shine
to shine
c) Paul Meredith, 1999
