People in the Balkans have an amazing, fantastic and often darkly fatalistic sense of humor, which I noticed all the time when I was there. This song is inspired by all that. |
CD: Shadows of Belgrade
Label: self released in Hong Kong (pm productions)
Credits: written, arranged, recorded and performed by Paul Meredith. Mastering assistance in HK from Simon Hui. |
Story Behind the Song
The song's structure and style are somewhat influenced by Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," a song that I adore. I started this song in September 1999 in Macedonia, and finished the writing and recording in early 2000 in Belgrade. The guitars and guitar-thumping percussion were recorded in Belgrade as well.
Lyrics
LET'S JUST TRY TO LAUGH
1. When the office gals and your so-called pals get together to get you fired
And you can't buy Christmas toys for the boys cause your credit card's expired
So you take 'em to the zoo, you step on monkey doo, and you get bit by the giraffe
Then hey daddy, let's just try to laugh
2. When you're achin' for a cigarette and you forget that you don't smoke
And your fast food takes forever and all you wanted was a coke
And your prodigal son says hey I'm a vegetarian and you just killed the fatted calf
Then hey daddy, let's just try to laugh
Yes there's times when laughter's really only sadness in disguise
But even when he's down the clown still just wants to put some magic back in your eyes
Laugh at your dictator, sooner or later he'll be overthrown
Meanwhile we smile whatever, you and me laughin' together, so we don't cry alone,
Hey hey, don't be cryin' all alone
3. When you feel your heart is breakin' cause you've forsaken a true friend
If you had a fallin' out and doubt you can fall back in again
It's just like the Chinese say, trouble share is trouble half
Well if that's true, maybe me and you can just try to laugh...
c) Paul Meredith, 2000
