    Story Behind the Song
I actually came up with the guitar riff sometime in the late 80s, and finished the song a few years later. I like the way the song makes references to works of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and John Lennon, weaving the references into a song about how, at least for me, my musical heroes inspire me. Hope you like it.

    Lyrics
    MY HEROES ASK THE QUESTION

    1. "How many times must a man look up before he sees the sky?
How many ears must one man have before he hears people cryin'
How many deaths does it take before he knows that too many people die?"
And how many people still askin' why?

How many protest songs'll get wrote before they're obsolete?
How many dreamers must we quote until the dream's completed
Yes'n how's this poor world ever gonna pass its hardest test?
    My heroes ask the question

But the answer's not so hard to comprehend
It's not just blowin' in the wind
It's in our power to transcend...
Or are we all just waiting for the end?

    2. "Hello darkness my old friend," it's been a long long time
You showed me hell if we don't see the mountain we must climb
A "vision" of black destiny you "planted in our brains"
And the song showed us how to break the chains

"Imagine there's no country," my hero wonders if we can
"Nothing to kill or die for in this brotherhood of man...
Imagine all the people..." livin' a life in peace
    My heroes' questions never cease

But the answer's not so hard to comprehend, it's not just blowin' in the wind
A brighter vision can be found outside the walls of silent sound
Imagine all the people free, "Give Peace a Chance," and "Let it Be"
Peace is around you and within -- it's in the air, it's in your skin
It's not just blowin' in the wind, it's in our power to transcend...
Or are we all just waiting for the end?

    3. Well how long before the killin' stops and we put the guns away?
Yes'n how many years until we stop pretending it's okay?
Voices rhymin' ringin' jingle jangle in my mind
The only prayer I understand sometimes...

    4. Sing your song my heroes, I believe that you believe
Take us to the "Most Great Peace" we're destined to achieve
I'll take the inspiration, and I'll try to take what's best
My heroes, ask the question -- take the test

'Cause the answer's not so hard to comprehend, it's not just blowin' in the wind
A brighter vision will be found outside the walls of silent sound
Imagine all God's people free -- "Give Peace a Chance" and "Let it Be"
Every messenger has a different name but the message still remains the same...
And there's the meaning so it seems, peace is more than just a dream
Don't believe them when they say that war is nature's only way
Peace is around you and within, it's in the air it's in your skin
It's not just blowin' in the wind... it flows through you and me my friend
Hear the words my heroes send, people got the power to transcend...

Or are we all just waiting for the end?
