Story Behind the Song
This was written in January 2000, and recorded in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, with vocals added later in Hong Kong. I like the friendly bouncy feel of the song. Upon hearing the song one might think I spend a lot of time worrying about my son. And one would be right (smile).
The guitar riff was a bit inspired by one of my favorite all time songs, Genesis' "Keep it Dark."
Lyrics
MAMA YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE
1. Mama you're the only one to see that that boy never hurts anyone
He thinks he's in a war that's gotta be won and he can't see what you see
Mama he's just a troubled kid, he's missin' his dad and all the things that they did
Now you're the one got to help him get rid of the anger in his heart
Love's the way to stop that war, love's what he's created for
And you're the one he can't ignore -- he'll listen to what you say...
and a boy's got to have a woman show him the way
2. Mama you're the light inside, you dried his tears every time that he cried
If he loses his way, you got to be his guide or his pride's gonna get too strong
Mama teach your children peace, make that kid your masterpiece
Teach him to forgive, teach him how to release the fire in his heart
Love's the way to stop that war, love's what he's been longin' for
And you're the one he can't ignore -- he'll listen to what you say...
and a boy's got to have a woman show him the way
His spiritual journey's only just begun
Mama gonna help that boy to find an angel inside, shinin' just like my sun
3. Mama teach him right from wrong, show him how to give to get along
We got nothin' to fear, I just want to hear the song inside his heart
Love's the way to stop that war, love's what he's created for
And you're the one he can't ignore -- he'll listen to what you say...
and a boy's got to have a woman show him the way
