Story Behind the Song
Jeff and I lived in separate cities, and wrote this tune via email back in 1996 or so. It was one of our first collaborations, but by no means our last. We've both moved to Nashville and continue to write together when time permits. This song won the Austin Songwriters' Group's Country Category in 1996. Thanks to Galen Breen (producer) and Dusty Drake (vocalist) for the demo on this tune.
Lyrics
BABY AIN'T A BABY ANYMORE
Copyright 1996 Jeff Walter and Olin Murrell
There's trouble in the Turner house. Bathroom door is locked.
Jennifer's been camped in there since roughly six o'clock,
Fixing up her hair. Talking on the phone.
Some young hunk named Sonny just won't leave her alone.
Daddy's going crazy,
'Cause his baby ain't a baby anymore.
There's a Delta 88, parked out in the drive.
A newly licensed driver with an earring has arrived.
Daddy looks him over, sighs and shakes his head.
Gives the boy a warning; past midnight son, you're dead.
Daddy's going crazy,
'Cause his baby ain't a baby anymore
Seems like yesterday she was playing with her toys
When did Daddy's girl become so interested in boys?
Each day she's more a woman than the day before
He hates to face the fact she ain't a baby anymore
Sonny hits the driveway. Clock says twelve oh nine.
Daddy's in the living room, peeking through the blinds.
Inside the Delta 88, he spies a warm embrace.
He can't tell what they're saying. He can see it's face to face
Daddy's going crazy,
'Cause his baby ain't a baby anymore
Seems like yesterday she was playing with her toys
When did Daddy's girl become so interested in boys?
Each day she's more a woman than the day before
He hates to face the fact she ain't a baby anymore
Daddy's taking baby's growing up too hard.
She says, "He treats her like a baby," and he's guilty of the charge.
If he hears what Sonny calls her, he'll wind up cryin.
'Cause when Sonny calls her "baby," she don't seem to mind.
(INSTRUMENTAL BREAK)
Seems like yesterday she was playing with her toys
When did Daddy's girl become so interested in boys?
Each day she's more a woman than the day before
He hates to face the fact she ain't a baby anymore
