    Story Behind the Song
Greg Forrest rediscovered his love of music in 1999 when he happened upon a dog-eared copy of Lawrence Ferlinghetti's best-selling volume A Coney Island of the Mind in a used bookstore. In 2002, he received the permission and approval of Ferlinghetti and his publisher, New Directions, to pursue an original CD collaboration.

Greg is excited to be involved with the extremely talented band of musicians called Soul Circus and he is dedicated to maximizing the artistic and commercial potential of the Ferlinghetti project. Soul Circus is planning to record Volume One in the Fall of 2003.

    Lyrics
The penny candy store beyond the el
Is where I first fell in love
    With unreality.

    Jellybeans glowed in the semi-gloom
    Of that September afternoon.
A cat upon the counter moved
    Among the licorice sticks
    And Tootsie Rolls
    And Oh Boy Gum.

    Outside the leaves were fallin'
    as they died
A wind had blown away the sun...

    A girl ran in.
    Her hair was rainy.
    Her breasts were breathless
    in the little room.

    Outside the leaves were fallin'
    as they cried
Too soon, too soon, too soon.
