Story Behind the Song
When you have a last name like Patel, you tend to be easily categorized and stereotyped, at least amongst the Indians in the US. After a while it gets to some people, and one of those people is Mileen.
At some point in college (as many of us do), he started to figure out who he was and finally became comfortable in his own skin.
When he found that identity, he wrote what he was feeling. The lyrics basically convey a sense of self-reflection and then a realization of something new, but something that was always there, just waiting to be discovered.
The chorus pretty much nails it on the head, saying that while this person is more common than "Smith" by name, he still is a unique individual.
The great thing about this song is that while Mileen only wrote about what he was feeling at the time, it completely connected with Alex when she sang it on the recording. Given the [unintentional] universal theme, it's safe to assume that many more people will likely be able to relate as they too discover themselves.
Originally written as part of Kritter (a Kaizer side project), the band rerecorded it with the 9 originals in the winter of 98. Given the band's affinity for the title, someone suggested they name the CD "More Common Than Smith" - needless to say, it stuck.
Lyrics
Thought I knew my face in the glass
So sure of myself in the past
Had to change, had to think to belong
Misled about how to be strong
Always taking middle ground
Identity to be found
Some may say that I fit right in
But where are they coming from?
You could say I'm more common than Smith
But as rare as they come
Simple minded yet simply unique
Living in a dull world with mystique
Not elite, just apart from the rest
Just above but no need to contest
How could a name mean so much
when stereotypes are true?
Have no need to find yourself
Throw away a point of view
Some may say that I fit right in
But where are they coming from?
You could say I'm more common than Smith
But as rare as they come.
Serves them right, as they stay in their world
With identical thoughts and minds
But how many times, do you see
One of a kind
Some may say that I fit right in
But where are they coming from?
You could say I'm more common than Smith
But as rare as they come
