Story Behind the Song
The motivation for this song was the beat. The original name of the beat as produced was "Saying Goodbye" but upon first hearing it, all I could envision were ships on a voyage sometime in the 1600's or so. It just sounded like traveling music to me. I began writing it in the summer of 2000 and completed the song in the summer of 2003. It took one day to record, mix and master.
Lyrics
World Traveler (Verse 1)
As Egyptian waters travel down through the banks of the Nile
I stand in denial and glance at my life as a child
Through the eyes of the sparrow cuz life is like a river
Running free from the start near the end it’s narrow
Through my travels I discovered the world from different angles
Riding camels through the desert with turbans, robes and sandals
I handled cannons in wars as aircrafts soared above
And dropped bombs over Pearl Har-Bor
Plus I navigate the seas with ease
On my knees contemplating as the sails just catch the breeze
Pushing me through the ocean to all the foreign lands
Spanning Africa, to UK, China, Japan, in the Philippines I come to understand myself
And learned some valuable things as I took time for delf
On the back of a horse, I seen the countryside of Ireland
It lit the fire inside of my eyes from admiring God’s work
I start first by roaming the forest
Where creatures sing symphonies as the wind brings the chorus
In the Mountains of Mourne, I watched night turn to dawn
The emotions that I felt, I express through song
I travel on as my voyage turns into a safari
Through the jungle similar to the scenes that’s in Jumanji
I seen the Seven Wonders and the Ark of Noah
Went to India, and used this beat to charm a cobra
I started over, and made a journey to the pyramids
I seen things I didn’t believe exist, seen a mirage of the virgin mother
Gently hover above, as I was lost guided me with a dove
Stonehenge, the Great Wall and the birthplace of Jesus
Unfortunately seen the Black Death causing diseases
From the North to the South Pole, I seen the whole Atlas
Even unknown spots such as Atlantis, I got an advantage being a world traveler
Some never leave home, I’ve seen more than half of the globe
It’s seven continents, same number of seas
Throughout history, it’s a larger number of thieves
Cuz, from the east of an unknown land I seen three ships approach off in the distance
They was, probably named in a place called Spain
After a child, something small and a beautiful dame
It was a man named Chris, slaughtered men and raped the women
Claiming he discovered the land, but it isn’t true
We knew the Indians was already here so they discovered it
Columbus is wrong he stumbled unto it
And the country gave him a holiday
He’s a liar and a thief so I say that’s not the way
I’ve seen enough here, I’m flipping the calendar
Continuing my journey in time the world traveler
World Traveler (Verse 2)
In World War II I held guns that was firing
Was part of the squad that helped save Private Ryan
Seen the Holocaust first hand
The Jews all across the earth’s land
Was snatched up, locked in a chamber and gassed up
I backed up through history
Played a part in the Civil War as the North Side took the victory
In Italy I painted the illest pictures
In numerous lands I translated forbidden scriptures
Going, back and forth through time and territories
Because seeing and exploring the world it never bores me
However wars be long, I’ve seen many
From the Cold to the Vietnam
I told Ali to stand strong with his decision
Not to fight a country that has never made jokes on blacks about chicken
Picking cotton is what’s happening now
But you seen that through my eyes already
Heard the story out of my mouth
I fast forward to the movement of blacks for civil rights
Where I shed many tears on consecutive nights
Cuz I seen an explosion in Birmingham, Alabama
Four girls was killed in the wickedest manner
I seen a man named Lee the morning of November 22nd in 1963
He said nothing when I asked him of his plans for the day
That afternoon he assassinated JFK
When Malcolm X compared it to chickens coming home to roost
Whites would’ve like to seen him get thrown from, a noose
But my brother Malcolm got killed too, by his own
It’s two of God’s children, both of them going home
How I see it, believe it or not, I seen Jesus and we broke bread together
I fought lions in Rome, they made a movie Russell Crowe played me
Places I visited names range from A to Z
That’s Afghanistan to Zaire, Albania to Zimbabwe
When I travel, nothing’s in my way
It’s so many different ways of life
Even a place up north where nothing separates the day from night
Except time cuz it’s twenty-four hours of sunshine
I learn things when I travel the world these are my journeys in time
Chorus (3X)
Journeys in time, I’m the world traveler
