Live from the Viper bar on March 17, 2002. My good friends (and rock band extraordinaire) Machinery Hall headlined the show, and they asked me to introduce them with a little numbah...a full studio version is coming soon to this site, with the less well known (and more poignant) second verse. |

Story Behind the Song
This melody is an old Irish tune. It can be found with two or three other sets of words. Probably the most popular rendition in the late 19 and early 20th century was entitled "O Mary dear", and that was the version John McCormack always sang. Strangely, McCormack hated these lyrics, prefering the traditional "Irish" lyrics. This version has been universally accepted as the best for this song since they were written by an American named Fred Weatherly, sometime around the first world war. The story I heard is that he wrote it for his son going off to war.
