Story Behind the Song
This was written in Chicago, and is entirely fabrication.. after an all-night conversation with a young American living in Italy... We'd talked about the notion of me sailing my sloop across the Atlantic and just showing up in Italy one day for a visit. This song was a result of that conversation.
Lyrics
Rogue Crags of Scotland
When we pulled out of St. John, I knew that you had something to say
Saw it in the hesitation... as you stared back at the bay.
When we made port in Senegal, it was still preyin' on your mind,
And when I pulled out of Dundee (by myself,) there was nothin' worth denyin'
I can take any thing that the sea can mercilessly give
Since I left you in Dundee, I've left behind my will to live.
Chorus: In the hills high in Scotland, I left my life behind -
It may be an illusion, but it's taken my mind -
Keeping with this obsession - has robbed me of my youth, left me
Damned little romance filled with fragments of truth,
And it's the truth drove me half-crazed -
Takes more than lies to make you blind, til
In the rogue crags of Scotland.... I left my life behind.
What good are principles... I can't keep, you can't forgive?
I been starin' out that channel now for hours, the sea's no peace to give.
Damn all that honesty, the foolishness that guided my tongue!
Damn every thing I've ever learned - that made me so dumb.
I can take any thing that the sea can mercilessly give
Since I left you in Dundee, I've left behind my will to live.
CHORUS
Guess I should go back, and find something to say
Maybe I'd convince you it's together we should stay.
I really haven't got much choice - Tell me, what else can I do?
Been starin' cross this channel now for hours, and all I can see is you!
I can take any thing that the sea can mercilessly give
Since I left you in Dundee, I've left behind my will to live.
CHORUS
Damn those rogue crags of Scotland... Where I left my life behind...
