Story Behind the Song
My roots in opera are a cappella. This comes from not being able to read music, and being too afraid to ask for accompanists (both these maladies have been remedied). Many people first paid attention to me and were amazed because of my ability to sing without any accompaniment at open mics (except for that which was present in my head, which is of course the full orchestration...a fact soon picked up on by stunned admirers). A cappella is still one of my favorite modes to sing. It is where I am at my strongest: the song is mine to bend and shape as I please, almost as if I had a conductor following me with his full orchestra. The only liberties I ever took were artistic interpretive ones. Listen to a recording of this from Del Monaco, then listen to mine, and you will see first hand what I mean by "orchestration in my head." The timing will be eerily close.
Lyrics
"Let no one fear me, though I am armed. Here is the end of my journey. O glory! Othello is through. And you, how pale though art, and stagnant and silent and beautiful. Poor creature, born under an evil star. Cold, how absorbed a chaste life in heaven. Desdemona! Desdemona! AH! Dead! Dead! Dead! I have yet another weapon! Ah! (He stabs himself)
Before I killed you, wife, I kissed you, and now I die under that shadow. A kiss! Nd another...Ah! One final kisss....(he dies)
