Story Behind the Song
After the solving of the Princess Turandot's three riddles, the princess welch's on her bet and won't marry, so Calaf (the tenor, and successful answerer of all three riddles) offers a counter bet: if the princess can find out his name by dawn, he will go to his death. If she cannot, she must marry him. She issues her decree of "No one shall sleep"...until the stranger's name is found. Calaf predicts his triumph at dawn.
Lyrics
"No one sleeps! No one sleeps. You, pure princess, in your cold chamber, watching the stars, trembling with love and hope!
My mystery resides in me, no one will know my name until I reveal it on your lips, when the light shines magnificently! And my kiss shall unveil the silence.
Depart, o night! Set, o stars! Set o stars, at dawn I shall be the victor! I shall win! I will win!"
