Story Behind the Song
Another "one take shot"...Verdi and me are soul brothers when it comes to emotion. In this scene, which has a recitativo, then the aria proper starting with "Ma, o pianto o duol", Otello expresses his grief at what he believes to be Desdemona's infidelity. Slowly, he works himself into a rage, and declares "First she will confess, then I will kill her!" Iago bursts in with the proof: a handkerchief he has convinced Otello is Cassio's, left in Desdemona's room. He urges on Otello: "Cassio is there!" Otello replies "There? Heaven, O Joy!" and the scene ends (All english quotes are my Italian interpretation from the text of the aria)
