"Frondi tenere...Ombra mai fu" | genre: Opera | |

|
"Frondi tenere" is what's known as the recitativo, or "acting" in Italian. I did this part a cappella because there was no accompaniment with it, then the aria proper starts with symphonic support.
Almost always listed as "The Largo from Handel's Xerxes"...Lisa Gerard from Dead Can Dance has an excellent version recorded. |
CD: From The Heart
Label: A.C.I.

Story Behind the Song
This is usually sung by a mezzo, but most tenors can't resist it's soaring melody...it truly fits the term "aria", which means "air"...that's how I feel when I sing it, like I'm floating! Caruso, Gigli, Corelli...all the greats have preserved this beauty with a rendition. Here's my take.
Lyrics
Recitatavo: "Kind and lovely branches of my beloved plane tree, fate smiles for you! May thunder, lightning and tempest never shock your dear peace, or the rapacious southern wind violate you!"
Aria: "Never was the shade of any plant sweeter, lovable or more precious!"
