Story Behind the Song
For all those times that we looked forward to a year ending, in order to put the past behind us... for all those times we made a vow to NEVER repeat the past, and did.... for all those lonely hours we spent wishing for more and for someone to give us more... I wrote this lyric to let all of you know that the only hope we have of a sure thing in this universe is our salvation in Jesus Christ and the promise of a better day as long as we stay connected to Him.
I wrote this lyric, alone, on New Year's Eve, 1997 and gave it to a friend. The tune came to me in the spring of 1999 as I prepared to write and perform my sophomore release, GETHSEMANE HOUR. I wanted a song for all believers to sing instead of Auld Lang Syne for the Millennium New Year's Eve...and I remembered this lyric. So, having given away the only copy, I took it back!! And, wrote this tune!! Naturally!!!
In the studio, we fought about the interpretation of the ending... I felt the anointing coming and I just wanted to sing. But, with the restrictions of technology, I had to wait beyond the time I felt I needed to, so when I "prayed", I did so because I couldn't sing anymore...I was really troubled in my spirit about the previous events and so overcomed that I just prayed into the open mike. But, it would appear God was even in that delay, because without it, I would have never conceived this ending.
He does cause all things to work together for good...(Romans 8:28)
Thanks to my collaborators, Jonathan DuBose, Jr. and Edwin Jesus Ramos, Jr. for enduring an extrememly focused artist who, at times, can only hear the Voice in the Distance. Forgive me, if sometimes I appear not to listen to the voices in the room.
The Holy Spirit in us created a good song, anyway. Edwin, your piano over-dubs, done on the mix day, were a special gift and a much welcomed addition. I love you, my brother, "for giving so much....for so little."
May we all know the Peace that surpasses all understanding. His name is Jesus.
Lyrics
A Distant Peace
(Douglas Powell, Jonathan DuBose, Jr.)
Theres a distant peace, eluding me
Tho, I'm always looking for signs.
And when I cannot find what I'm searching for,
I look forward to Auld Lang Syne.
Auld Lang Syne, The passage of Time,
I place my hope, on what will be.
The battles I fought, and the loves I've lost
Have yet to deter this journey for me.
In the distance I hear, Peace is near!
And I know that Voice, I've heard It before.
As I travel on, leaving heart and home,
My resolve strengthens the further I go.
Auld Lang Syne, the passage of Time,
I place my hopes on what could be
Restore my Faith, Illumine my Way,
Let not this Journey destroy me, Lord!
In the Distance, I hear,
Peace, Peace is Near!
In the Distance, I hear,
Peace, Oh!, Peace is Near!
In the Distance, I hear,
Jesus (Peace) is Coming Soon.
In the Distance, I hear,
Jesus is Coming Soon!!
Even so, Lord. Even so,
Lord, Come Soon!!!
In the Distance , I hear,
That PEACE! Oh! Peace is Near!
COME!
Oh! Peace Come, Come
Peace, in the midnight hour,
Peace in the morning timePeace.
Peace, Oh, Lord.
(Peace Prayer)
Oh, Lord , we Love You.
And we re so sorry for all the times
that we thought we knew what we didnt know.
And we did things that brought you pain,
and shame and we placed the blame
on everyone but ourselves
But, Oh, Lord,
if you would just come back, soon.
Real Soon.
(Enter, The Spirit)
See I am coming soon, and My reward is with me. To repay all according to their deeds. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Revelations 22: 12-13
