Story Behind the Song
Numbers and music have an intimate relationship. I decided to exploit this relationship for The Man Who Had No Eyes. The short story it is based on is encoded in a string of numbers (such as 128:4:5:1). Instead of decoding it into text, I decided to decode it directly into music. The first number became the length of the note (ticks in a MIDI sequencer). The second, multiplied by ten, became the velocity (how hard you hit the note). The third became the octave. The last number became the note (1=C, 2=C#, 3=D, etc.).
What was surprising is how tonal the piece is. There is a lot of dissonance and odd intervals between the notes, but the piece is definitely in the key of D minor, with the vast majority of the notes being various octaves of D.
